Let's Talk About Books

An out of practice reader discussing the books I get around to reading.

Reading progress update: I've read 79 out of 369 pages.

The Martian - Andy Weir

I wanted to read more tonight but it turns out that wine makes me sleepy. Who knew? Don't drink and read, folks.

It's been a long week. This has nothing to do with the book, I just feel like sharing. Broke up with the boyfriend on Monday. I feel bad reading this book now since technically he bought it for me. But whatever, it's a good book, I'll get over the guilt. Work was rough. I don't like my job and hope to leave it as soon as I can afford to. AND my sister's in the hospital. She's okay now but that was rather scary. So yeah, it's been a hell of a week. Reading does help though.

I don't know if I like the segments of the book that take place on earth. They're not bad, the narration just isn't as interesting as Mark's parts. I love Mark. He's such an amazing character. I haven't seen the movie yet but I hope Matt Damon brought him to life. He's a good enough actor that I'm sure he did.

The way Weir incorporates science into this book is amazing. My dad, a chemical engineer, was SUPER into space and space travel, to the point where apparently he wanted to be an astronaut at some point. So we grew up with a healthy respect of space and science. So reading this book brings up a lot of memories of being in the backyard with Dad trying to show us Mars. It might be a totally subjective thing, but it does make me like the book that much more.

This was a fairly vague discussion of what I've read so far. Blame the wine. I'll have more detailed ones in the future though. That's for sure.
